2009 Season Wrap Up

Well the leaves outside are changing from a bright green to a dull orange and yellow and for golf fans that means that another year of Hooters Tour golf has come to an end. Before all of you grab the pigskin and start your fantasy football teams, let’s recap another exciting year of Hooters Tour golf. Golf, like any other sport, is a game of streaks. For 2006 Hooters Tour Player of the Year Ted Potter, the streak started at the beginning of the season and hasn’t stopped. Potter collected his third career Hooters title at The Amelia Island Plantation Classic, the first event of the season. Potter was the most consistent golfer all week as he was the only player that fired all four rounds in the sixties. With his final round 67, Potter was able to outlast Stephen Shellock by two strokes after trailing by one entering the final frame.

Fast forward to June and the “Magic Man” found the winners’ circle for the second time in 2009 and fourth time in his career as he went “all in” at The Gold Strike Casino Golf Classic. Potter cruised to victory in Tunica by six strokes over Travis Bertoni. With win number two and five top 10’s sandwiched in between, Potter was dominating the top spot on the money list with over $109,000 in earnings and found himself in line to capture the coveted Player of the Year (POY) honors for the second time in his career.

A week later at the Buffalo Run Casino Classic Potter  locked up the POY honors when he came from two strokes back to defeat Martin Flores in a four hole playoff to earn win number three of the season.

With the POY honors locked up after ten events, Potter set his sights on Chad Campbell’s single season money title of $188,279 set in 2000 when Campbell won eight times before becoming a four-time winner on the PGA TOUR.

Although Potter came up just short of Campbell single season title with $181,104, he had one of the most impressive season’s on tour by making 17 of 18 cuts with three wins, ten top 5’s and 17 top 25 finishes.

While Potter was able to take away the Player of The Year award with three wins, Joe Affrunti was making a run at his best season as a professional. The former University of Illinois golfer took home the Most Improved Award for a season that saw him collect his first Hooters Tour title, make 11 of 11 cuts with five top 5’s and a three tournament stretch at the end of the season that consisted of a second place finish, his first win and a T-5. Affrunti finished the season 4th on the money list with $83,848, nearly $60,000 more than he has made in any other season on the Hooters Tour. Potter and Affrunti weren’t the only players that had successful seasons on the Hooters Tour as rookie and former Tennessee golfer Phillip Pettitt Jr. had a coming out party. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native began the season with three straight missed cuts before making eleven straight to finish the season. During his run of eleven straight cuts, Pettitt Jr. earned eight top 25 finishes and collected his first career win at The Capitol Chevrolet Classic with a final round course record setting eleven-under par 61. Rookie of the Year honors were locked up by Pettitt with the win and a tenth place finish on the season long money list with $59,457. The Golf Achievement award is presented each season to the golfer that best personifies the professional golfer. The 2009 Golf Achievement award was presented to Nick Rousey.

The Hooters Tour would like to congratulate Ted Potter, Joe Affrunti, Phillip Pettitt Jr. and Nick Rousey on their accomplishments this year as well as all the other players that competed this season. Also, golf fans don’t forget to follow your favorite Hooters Tour players as they try to make their dream of playing on the PGA Tour a reality in December at the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School.
